Hui Wa`a Association

*

There are two outrigger canoe racing associations on Oahu that hold regattas (sprint races) from late May to the end of July. The Waikiki Yacht Club paddling program is a member of the Na `Ohana o na Hui Wa`a Association. Hui Wa`a, as it is generally known, was established in 1973, with its first regatta in l974.

Hui Wa`a’s mission is to pass along the ancient traditions of canoe racing to each of its paddlers while incorporating the innovations that have been made in the sport throughout the years. Good sportsmanship and competition are taught, in addition to promoting participation in a healthy, physical activity. Medals are awarded for the first three crews in each category and points are awarded to the first four crews. Points are accumulated throughout the season and determine which crews are selected to receive a bid to the State Championship Regatta held in early August.
